State lawmakers understand the situation, and efforts throughout the country are underway to find alternative, private-market solutions to help pay for LTC services. Ten years ago it looked like long-term care insurance was going to be a major part of the solution. Unfortunately, growth in sales for the last decade has actually declined and serious market disruptions further hampered the product.

The combined impact of MetLife leaving the market in 2010 and The Guardian leaving the market in 2011, multiple rate increases from Genworth and John Hancock as well as states taking over entire blocks of business to ensure solvency, has undermined consumer confidence. Read More

Ethnic elders will grow 180 percent in the next two decades. Now stimulus money is helping boost research into ways to bring them better care.

A decade ago, Dr. Carmen Green got to work as a junior researcher on improving management of pain medicine for older African Americans. Now federal stimulus funds are helping her and other senior researchers “pay forward” the opportunity they had by mentoring a new generation of health scientists. “The biggest gift for me is seeing new scholars I’ve mentored move forward,” Green said, in their efforts to close the health disparities gap between white elders and seniors of color in the United States.
